SaltConf19 training courses include all-new content and are only available to registered Saltconf19 conference+training attendees.

Twelve unique SaltConf19 training courses focused on helping you get the most out of SaltStack intelligent automation for IT operations, security and compliance, and network operations, Windows management, and even a deep dive with Thomas Hatch, SaltStack CTO, into the SaltStack Umbra artificial intelligence module.

SSCE Exam Included

SaltStack is offering one free-of-charge sitting for the SaltStack Certified Engineer certification exam at SaltConf19 to training attendees (a $350 value).

One sitting for the SSCE certification exam will be available exclusively to SaltConf19 training attendees. The exam must be taken at SaltConf19. SaltConf19 training is not a replacement for SaltStack Enterprise I & II training and is not meant to prepare an attendee for the SSCE exam.

  • Course descriptions are provided below, organized by track. Add desired classes to your agenda when registering for the conference.
  • Make sure to select the conference+training option when registering for to get access to SaltConf19 training courses.
  • To preserve quality of instruction and experience, each course will be limited to approximately 75 attendees, and courses will reach capacity.
  • Training is delivered by SaltStack Certified Trainers and SaltStack software engineers.
  • One sitting for the SaltStack Certified Engineer exam is offered to SaltConf19 training attendees.
  • The exam will be offered on Monday and Tuesday. The SaltConf19 agenda lists exam windows. Visit the SaltConf19 registration and information desk on site for more information and to get access to the exam.

SaltConf19 training will be held on Monday, Nov. 18, and Tuesday, Nov. 19. The SaltConf19 training schedule is exactly the same on both days and offers 12 unique courses each day. You will be able to attend a maximum of six courses while at SaltConf19, three on Monday and three on Tuesday. Courses start at 9:45 am, 12:15 pm, and 2:30 pm each day.

The SaltConf19 training content and format is unique to SaltConf19 and teaches SaltStack best practices and recommended usage offering a hands-on lab component.

SaltConf19 training courses are built for beginner, intermediate, and advanced SaltStack users and are organized into tracks for ITOps, SecOps, NetOps, and advanced use cases. Each training course lasts one hour and forty five minutes and is offered once per day.

Get the most out of SaltStack Enterprise to optimize IT operations at scale.

Introduction to the Salt Automation Engine

Skill level: Beginner
Offered: 9:45 am on Monday and Tuesday
Prerequisite: Comfortable in a command line. Python and YAML experience.

Attend this course to learn the basic functionality and core capabilities of the Salt Automation Engine. Hands-on exercises will walk the participant through the installation of a Salt Master and Salt Minions. Participants will also use SaltStack for remote execution, configuration management, orchestration, and event-driven automation. Students will learn how Salt Grains, Salt Pillar data, and the Salt Mine automate orchestration across multiple nodes.

Extending Salt with the SaltStack Enterprise Operations Framework

Skill level: Beginner
Offered: 12:15 pm on Monday and Tuesday
Prerequisite: Experience with Salt, or attend, “Introduction to the Salt Automation Engine.”

Attend this course to learn more about the valuable functions of the SaltStack Enterprise Operations Framework. This course will teach attendees how to use SaltStack Enterprise for multi-master scale and failover, API endpoints, persistent data storage, and third-party integrations. A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.

Introduction to the SaltStack Enterprise Console

Skill level: Beginner
Offered: 2:30 pm on Monday and Tuesday
Prerequisite: Experience with Salt, or attend, “Introduction to the Salt Automation Engine.”

Attend this course to learn more about the valuable functions of the newly re-designed SaltStack Enterprise graphical user interface. This course will teach attendees how to use SaltStack Enterprise for role-based user access controls, job creation, scheduling, and bulk orchestration, reporting and system-wide auditing. A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.

SaltStack SecOps

Use the power of SaltStack intelligent automation for SecOps to secure infrastructure at scale with active auditing, vulnerability remediation, and continuous compliance.

Defining custom security policies with SaltStack

Skill level: Intermediate
Offered: 9:45 am on Monday and Tuesday
Prerequisite: Experience with SaltStack Enterprise, or attend, “Introduction to the SaltStack Enterprise Console.”

Attend this course to learn how to define security policies in SaltStack SecOps. This course will teach attendees how to use SaltStack SecOps to import industry-standard compliance profiles from a live and growing repository of policies including CIS and DISA STIGS. Also learn how to create custom checks, turn off irrelevant pre-built checks, or create exemptions and rules for specific machines as needed. A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.

Infrastructure scanning and vulnerability management with SaltStack SecOps

Skill level: Intermediate

Prerequisite: Experience with SaltStack Enterprise, or attend, “Introduction to the SaltStack Enterprise Console.”

Attend this course to learn how to scan against security policies and use the new vulnerability management capabilities in SaltStack SecOps. This course will teach attendees how to scan systems and infrastructure against defined security polices and thousands of possible CVEs to detect and manage vulnerabilities for remediation. A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.

Automating vulnerability remediation for policy compliance with SaltStack SecOps

Attend this course to learn how to automatically remediate vulnerabilities using SaltStack SecOps. This course will teach attendees how to use defined security policies and vulnerability management scans to automate the work of vulnerability remediation at scale through automated remediation of infrastructure policy violations or through jobs that require review and approval before changes are executed. A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.

Deploying Salt for network automation

Skill level: Intermediate

Attend this course to learn how to deploy Salt for efficient management of almost any network infrastructure. This course will teach attendees how to deploy Salt for just about any network infrastructure type including the use of agent, agentless, Proxy Minion, Delta Proxy, and salt-sproxy modes. A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.

Orchestrating a network infrastructure update with Salt

Skill level: Advanced
Offered: 12:15 pm on Monday and Tuesday
Prerequisite: Experience with Salt for network automation.

Attend this course to learn how to orchestrate a network infrastructure update with no downtime using Salt. This course will teach attendees how to automate the orchestration of a rolling network update to increase operational efficiency, enhance visibility into current state, and streamline deployment of new infrastructure. A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.

Dynamic, event-driven network configuration and remediation

Attend this course to learn how to use SaltStack event-driven automation across network infrastructure. This includes presentation & mock up demonstration of DDOS prevention, hands-on lab with automated infrastructure recovery and responsive reporting, and instruction to build upon and broaden potential use cases from the learned skills and technology exercised in the class.

POP for More Pluggable Salt with New AI/ML and SSH Modules

Skill level: Advanced
Offered: 9:45 am on Monday and Tuesday
Prerequisite: Experience with Salt.

Attend this course to see the future of Salt through POP, the plugin-oriented programming paradigm. Salt POP is designed to make Salt modules even easier to write and extend. Following the Salt POP model, this course will provide insight into two of the newest and most exciting Salt projects.

First, Salt Umbra is the new AI/ML module. Attendees will be introduced to SaltStack event-driven automation fed by analysis of infrastructure trends and diverse data sets, and machine recommendations.

Second, Salt Heist is a modernized, standalone implementation of Salt SSH. Salt Heist will work with Python 3.6, Salt POP and asyncIO.

A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.

Highly available architecture with SaltStack Enterprise

This course will teach attendees how to get the most out of the SaltStack Enterprise for highly available and reliable operations with instruction on leveraging hot/hot, failover clustering, haproxy and pgpool. A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.

Manage and Secure Windows with SaltStack Enterprise

Skill level: Advanced

Prerequisite: Experience with SaltStack Enterprise and Windows.

Attend this course to learn how to manage and secure Windows with SaltStack Enterprise. SaltStack is commonly used to automate the work of patch management and vulnerability remediation for just about any operating system. This course will focus on the use of SaltStack Enterprise to manage and secure Windows using the WSUS integration to deploy high priority patches instantly with SaltStack. This course will also dive into the LGPO and WUA modules. A hands-on lab will guide participants through each of these concepts and more.
